There are still about 1,100 malls in the U.S. today, but a quarter of them at risk of closing over the next five years, according to estimates from Credit Suisse. Other analysts predict the number will be even higher. Some ailing malls have already moved on to a second life. Austin Community College in Texas purchased Highland Mall in 2012 and converted part of it into a tech-driven learning lab and library. In Nashville, Vanderbilt University Medical Center moved into the second floor of the 100 Oaks Mall a few miles from downtown. The Southland Christian Church in Lexington, Ky., bought their nearby mall and transformed part of it into an auditorium.

At the time, the few serious economists who worked in industry focused on macroeconomic issues like, say, how demand for consumer durables might change in the next year. Varian, however, was immediately invited to look at a Google project that (he recalls Schmidt telling him) “might make us a little money”: the auction system that became Google AdWords. Was just shopping around harry Hines for some crystals to glue on sunglasses and a place up the street recommended this place. I accidentally passed it so I went to another place that was also recommended named Maya’s beads. The first place was overpriced, like double. I didn’t know so I purchased about $77 worth of crystals. I left and went to Queen beads and was in heaven. Such a big variety to choose from and much much cheaper but quality is just as good. The owner so very nice and helpful. Will be a repeat customer for sure!!

Like all booms, this one couldn’t last. The decline began slowly, in the mid-2000s. The rise of online shopping and the blow of the Great Recession led to a drop in sales and foot traffic at big-brand retailers like JCPenney and Macy’s that anchored many of the country’s malls. Between 2010 and ’13, mall visits during the holiday season, the busiest shopping time of the year, dropped by 50%.
As the revenues from online sales continued to grow significantly researchers identified different types of online shoppers, Rohm & Swaninathan identified four categories and named them convenience shoppers, variety seekers, balanced buyers, and store-oriented shoppers. They focused on shopping motivations and found that the variety of products available and the perceived convenience of the buying online experience were significant motivating factors. This was different for offline shoppers, who were more motivated by time saving and recreational motives.
