Secondly – I lived in South America for a little while years ago, and it a huge eye opener. We really don’t need 6 pairs of black pumps ( + black loafers, black sandals…) After going through a period of about 5 years where I had no clothes budget at all (other than for socks and underwear and to replace dire necessities like my only pair of work pants), I find myself not much interested in shopping as a hobby. I like nice new clothes as much as the next person, but find myself spending less and less on clothes and household decor items. I don’t think I look like a bag lady, and my house is decorated currently. I just tend not to replace items just for the sake of replacing them. I enjoy TJ Maxx, Marshalls, consignment stores, etc, but don’t even frequent them very often. Food for thought, I hope.

The apparel start-up Everlane, for instance, is betting that it can capitalize on consumer backlash to retailers’ ever more vaguely underhanded tactics. The company spells out the cost of making each of its products and the profit it earns on each. Recently it informed customers that the cost of cashmere from Inner Mongolia had dropped. It was dropping the price of its cashmere sweaters by $25, because they now cost less to make. “Radical transparency,” Everlane founder and CEO Michael Preysman calls the approach.

You might find yourself dealing with fraudulent escrow sites that take your money – and run. Legitimate escrow sites make payments on your behalf to safeguard large-ticket purchases. But criminals behind escrow scams create fake escrow sites intended to spoof — or look identical to — the real thing. Before you know it, you’re making a payment to a criminal out to steal your money.

This story originally appeared in the March/April 2018 issue of Elite Traveler. The Last Drop specializes in finding the “freak accidents” of the spirits world. Founders Tom Jago and James Espey call themselves the antique dealers of the liquor industry, but we think they are more than that. Rather than simply selling bottles that have been carefully accounted for and tracked […]
“The holiday season is a great time to nurture your loyalists—those shoppers who have downloaded your mobile app,” Schreiner said. “Smart retailers will engage these individuals with personalized experiences, as they’ve already expressed interest in your company by giving your app real estate on the most personal device they own.”
